Taiwan trade body trained 4,000 New Southbound Policy experts
The Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) has trained almost 4,000 New Southbound Policy experts over the past two years. Southeast Asian languages and information about the economic environment were included in the courses.

President Tsai Ing-wen launched the New Southbound Policy after she took office in May 2016 to promote closer ties with the nations of Southeast and South Asia as well as with Australia and New Zealand.

TAITRA organized courses in South East Asian languages and programs to make businesses more familiar with the area.

The program also included education at schools in Southeast Asia, including Thai, Vietnamese or Bahasa Indonesia language courses. Courses in Taipei, Taichung and Kaohsiung featured materials about culture, doing business, e-trade and other aspects of the countries in the region.

The New Southbound Policy has helped reducing the island’s reliance on neighboring China, with rising numbers of tourist arrivals from Southeast Asia for example making up for politically motivated cuts in the numbers of Chinese travelers allowed to visit Taiwan.
